Why choose to go to an osteopath?
Osteopathy provides a treatment solution to all of life's aches and pains. A combination of soft-tissue massage style approaches with joint articulation, mo

bilisation and thrust techniques may form the basis of your treatment. More subtle application of cranial and visceral techniques may be necessary depending on the diagnosis; a diagnosis that will be attained from an extensive case history and clinical examination.
As part of your treatment, a full explanation will be given as to what to expect from the session and consent will be sought so that you are entirely aware of how and why you will be treated.

By law, osteopaths must register with the
General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). It is an offence for anyone to call themselves an osteopath or claim to perform osteopathic techniques if they are not registered.

The benefits of treatment :
The effects of manual therapy on an individual are well documented and the research into osteopathy continually grows.
According to Dr Simon Singh and Professor Edzard Ernst in their investigations of alternative therapies - 'Trick or Treatment' (Bantam Press,2008) - osteopathy is effective in treating back pain and less likely to cause adverse reactions than other therapies.
Generally patients report an increase in feelings of well-being, improved range of movement and decrease in pain levels. Historically, osteopathy has gained its support and reputation based on patient's responses and 'word of mouth' recommendations. With the Osteopaths Act of 1993, and the establishment of a formal degree structure to attain an osteopathic qualification, a growing evidence base was spawned that has started to give scientific understanding behind the treatment.
The latest recommendations from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
(NICE) suggests that up to nine sessions of manipulative therapy, as practised in osteopathy, would assist those suffering with long term
low back pain.
